Degree system

From a bachelor's degree to a master's degree

The University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien was the first university of applied sciences in Austria to switch to the new three-tier bachelor's/master's/doctoral degree system.

The new degree system is replacing the older two-tier Diplom/Doktorat system at Austrian universities of applied sciences and universities. This also means that the former Austrian academic titles such as Magister and Diplomingenieur are no longer awarded. The bachelor's/master's degree system has also put an end to the previous practice of distinguishing between degrees awarded by universities and those awarded by universities of applied sciences. This will make things much easier for students and graduates of universities of applied sciences on the international job market.

Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSc)

The bachelor's degree programs are the start of tertiary education. The requirements are a successful completion of secondary education - an Austrian university entrance qualification certificate (Maturazeugnis) or an international equivalent - and of the admission process consisting of a placement test and a personal interview. On graduation, students are awarded a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSc) degree.

Master of Science in Engineering (MSc)

A bachelor's degree - or a former Diplomingenieur degree - is the required proof of qualification for a master's degree program. Master's degree programs last between two and four semesters. After completing a master's degree program at UAS Technikum Wien, graduates are awarded a Master of Science in Engineering (MSc) degree. Graduates of master's degree programs are eligible to enroll in a doctoral program at a university.
