The ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) was introduced 1989 and ensures the comparability of the performance of students during their studies across the European Union and other collaborating European countries.
The courses of a degree program are assigned to so-called ECTS credits. They define the effort and workload required to successfully complete a course. This effort per course (course attendance, self-study as preperation, project work) is measured in hours an is therefore the ECTS-value of a respective course: 25 hours correspond to one ECTS credit point.
During one academic year the workload of a student in Austria amounts to 1.500 hours, which are 60 ECTS credits. Accordingly for the completion of a Bachelor's degree (6 semesters) a total of 180 credit points must be acquired.
ECTS makes teaching and learning in higher education more transparent across Europe and facilitates the recognition of all studies. The system allows for the transfer of learning experiences between different institutions, greater student mobility and more flexible routes to gain degrees.
