  • Networking technologies for tomorrow's internet: the challenges are faster speeds and increasing data capacity
  • Technikum Wien Academy offers industry-related advanced training starting WS 2016
  • Alcatel-Lucent University creates the framework for innovative collaboration

Lectures, research and advanced training of innovative network technologies – these are the  three pillars of of the co-operation between the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien and Alcatel-Lucent. The co-operation covers the special issues Virtual Service Routing, Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV). The common main issue is how to accelerate the network by intelligent applications despite growing data volume.

Professional contents have already been integrated into the R&D of the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien. Lectures for industry-related academic training at the Technikum Wien Academy will start at the winter semester 2016. This specific offering is unique in Central and Eastern Europe.

“The internet data volume is constantly growing. In order to improve the speeds despite continuously increasing data capacity, we do research on application-controlled IP networks. Intelligent applications can use net resources efficiently and manage the network. Jointly with the Alcatel-Lucent University, we build the framework for a high-level exchange and enhancement of our knowledge within this field of academic teaching, research and advanced training“, said the Managing Program Leader of the Master Course of Study Telecommunications & Internet Technologies at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien.

It is quite evident for Alcatel-Lucent that industry has to work closely with academic training and society, underlines Thomas Arnoldner, Country Senior Officer of Alcatel-Lucent in Austria. „As a leading innovation company in ultra-broadband access and IP technologies, we think it essential for the Austrian economy to train high tech experts for the networks of tomorrow. Because of the increasing relevance of digitization, it is more and more important  that as many people as possible become familiar with future technologies like Cloud and IP. That is why we are especially glad to work together with the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien, the leading technical university of applied sciences in the country, to achieve this.”

Industry-related advanced training: Technikum Wien Academy provides unique offering

The co-operation provides an industry-related advanced training in this area for the first time. The Technikum Wien Academy will offer certifications of the Alcatel-Lucent University. Ivo Lansky, Director IP Business CIS & CE of Alcatel-Lucent said: „The know-how we contribute as a leading provider of IP-Solutions is not only needed by engineers, who work, plan, manage, develop and do research in the field of IP networks. Also sales representatives, decision makers in networking or marketing professionals in the ICT area will become acquainted with future technologies. As market leader in the region, we want our customers and partners, as well as leaders from across all industries, to be fit for the future.“

„This type of industry-related academic training is unique in Central and Eastern Europe, so the Managing Program Leader. „ The development of IP networks is facing a strong momentum not only due to market changes but also within society. Our certification offering builds the interface between research and industry and provides therefore the latest know-how.“

Starting in the winter semester 2016, the following seminars are scheduled:

  • Alcatel-Lucent Network-Routing Specialist I (NRS I)
  • Alcatel-Lucent Network-Routing Specialist II (NRS II)
  • Alcatel-Lucent Multiprotocol Label Switching
  • Alcatel-Lucent Services Architecture

Academic teaching: Focuses in the Master's Program Telecommunications and Internet Technologies

Students of the Master's Program Telecommunications and Internet Technologies will work during their first two semesters on selected topics on the apprenticeship to „Network Routing Specialist“ offered by the Alcatel-Lucent University. In these lectures basics on network technologies, IP protocols, switching and routing, carrier ethernet and virtual service routing both in theory and practice will be taught.

The  Alcatel-Lucent University provides students of the Master's Program with documents from their Service Routing Certification (SRC) Program plus extensive software systems for the simulation and emulation of net components from Alcatel-Lucent like switches or routers.

Research: Network infrastructure of the future internet

The co-operation will be intensified by current and future activities of the  Telecommunications and Internet Technologies Institute. Research will be done about the network infrastructure of the future internet, especially about the realization of application-controlled IP networks. These topics will be deepened through projects and Master's theses of the students.  Research results of the Telecommunications and Internet Technologies Institute are constantly documented at conferences.

Through our blended learning strategy, classroom lectures are combined with technology-based training (web, CD-ROM, etc.) and hands-on experience, ensuring that students acquire theoretical as well as practical knowledge.

Alcatel-Lucent University training centers are individually certified to ensure a consistent, high-quality experience for our students. Locations have been selected to be in close proximity to major customer and employee concentrations.

Austria’s technical university of applied sciences

With around 9,000 graduates thus far and roughly 4,000 students, the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien is Austria’s largest purely technical university of applied sciences. The educational offerings consist of 12 bachelor’s and 17master’s degree programs, which are offered as full-time, part-time and/or distance study programs. Eight degree programs are taught in English. The educational offerings are based on a solid scientific foundation and are also practice-oriented. At UAS Technikum Wien, emphasis is not only placed on providing a high-quality technical education, but also on subjects with a focus on business and personal development. Close ties and collaborations with business and industry give students and graduates excellent career opportunities. The combination of theory and practical application is of central importance in both research and instruction.

The research and development activities at UAS Technikum Wien have grown significantly in recent years and currently concentrate on four research focuses: eHealth, Embedded Systems, Renewable Energies and Tissue Engineering. UAS Technikum Wien was founded in 1994 and in 2000 it became the first institution in Vienna to receive the status of a university of applied sciences. It became a member of the European University Association (EUA) in 2012 and is also a network partner of FEEI – Association of the Electrical and Electronics Industries.
