OeAD-Housing Office Summer Schools 2016

While some students enjoy their hardly earned leisure time during the holidays, others are visiting this year’s summer schools across the world. Among which, students from our partner institutions from China, Mongolia and Russia who are visiting summer schools offered by OeAD in Vienna, held under the motto “Green.Building.Solutions” (July 23 to August 14, 2016) and “Alternative Economic and Monetary Systems” (July 27 to August 14, 2016).

Ever since 2011, the OeAD-Housing Office offers two academic summer programs with the objectives to raise awareness of sustainability issues, to encourage international exchange in education and to train highly qualified academic professionals, who may become future decision-makers in global politics and other high-level platforms.[1]

This year's Green. Building. Solutions. academic program with focus on sustainability and renewable energy was dedicated to the current issue of “integrative living for new immigrants”. The students not only worked on new concepts regarding sustainable architecture, planning and ecological building design, but also enjoyed the annual excursions to Aspern's Urban Lakeside, Energyworld Spittelau or the Light Lab at Danube University in Krems.[2]

The program of the summer school Alternative Economic and Monetary Systems (AEMS) gave students the possibility to participate in the lectures, discussions and workshops with the focus on the availability of energy and other resources as well as the impact of societal and economic interaction in creating new possible approaches towards the reformation of the current economic and monetary systems.[3]

Among 91 participants from 41 countries there also were students from the strategic partner institutions of the UAS Technikum Wien. The students from Higher School of Economics in Moscow, the China Three Gorges University in China and Mongolia University of Science and Technology in Mongolia successfully completed these short academic programs and experienced high quality of an education exchange.

“There were a lot of lectures, and a rich social programme. During these two and a half weeks we attended lectures by professors from over 10 international universities, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The school's working language was English, and there were 44 students from different countries in our group. During lectures we learned about alternative viewpoints on contemporary economics and different monetary systems.” (Evgeny Golota, 2nd-year Master student in E-Business, Higher School of Economics)[4]

The Center for International Relations also welcomed the students to their office and gave them a short overview about some facts and figures as well as the main activities of the UAS Technikum Wien. The evening ended in a familiar get-together at the famous Figlmüller in the city center, where the students were invited to taste Austrian food and to find out more about Austrian culture and traditions.
