Modelling an Simulation in Biomedical Systems and Healthcare Process
Simulation and Analysis of the Cardio-pulmonary System
The focus area Simulation and Analysis of the Cardio-Pulmonary System at UAS Technikum Wien concentrates on the modelling and simulation of the cardio-pulmonary system, including advanced lung simulation and cardiovascular models. The objective is to realistically represent physiological processes, analyse complex interactions, and develop innovative approaches for research, development, teaching and training.
Within the Bachelor’s programme Biomedical Engineering (BBE) and the Master’s programmes Health & Rehabilitation Engineering (MGR) and Medical Engineering & eHealth (MME), students acquire in-depth competencies in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), physiological modelling, and the training of models using Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. In addition, Extended Reality (XR) technologies and both physical and digital simulation models are applied to bridge theory, experimentation, and application.
Close collaboration with medical institutions, research partners, and industry enables practice-oriented research and technology development. A key aim is to deepen the understanding of cardio-pulmonary function, develop innovative methods for testing and evaluating treatments—particularly in respiratory diseases—and create advanced educational and training tools.
A highlight is the electromechanical lung simulator xPULM(TM), designed and built at UAS Technikum Wien. xPULM(TM) enables realistic simulation of adult and paediatric lungs, aerosol generation and measurement, mechanical ventilation scenarios, and ex vivo lung perfusion. It serves as a platform for research, industrial validation, and academic training.

Medical Imaging & Optical Applications in Medicine
The field of Medical Imaging & Optical Applications at UAS Technikum Wien focuses on medical imaging and technological applications in medical optics. In the Bachelor’s program “Biomedical Engineering” (BBE), the Master’s programs “Healthcare and Rehabilitation Technology” (MGR), and “Medical Engineering & eHealth” (MME), students receive training in current developments and applications in medical imaging and optics. Research is concentrated on the application and development of new technologies, such as annotation and analysis of medical image data and simulations with special focus on optical systems. Close collaborations with industry, research institutions, and medical facilities enhance knowledge transfer and provide practical training. The goals include transferring knowledge to students, developing targeted applications, and contributing to the advancement and refinement of the field at both national and international levels.
Current projects in the area:
- Transmission OCT (tOCT): Development of a new OCT system based on transmission measurements instead of backscatter data.
