Dive into Ecotoxicology: UAS Technikum Wien at Setac Conference in Seville

14 June, 2024
At the 34th annual SETAC conference in Seville, over 3,000 participants discussed solutions to environmental problems and presented the latest research. Among the institutions represented was UAS Technikum Wien, which presented a poster on pesticide exposure in hares.
Representatives of UAS Technikum Wien were among the more than 3,000 participants at the 34th annual meeting of SETAC (Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry) from May 5 to 9 in Seville, Spain. Carina Huber-Gries (FL LSE), Martina Ortbauer (STG MUT), Barbara Gepp (KFL CEE), Susanne Gangl (KF CEE) and the MUT students Caroline Gebert, Johanna Lechle, Jasmin Tiefenböck and David Wohlfahrt represented their institution at this important event.
Main topics of the conference
Under the motto “Science-based solutions in times of crisis: Integrating science and policy for environmental challenges”, the conference offered a variety of special events and training sessions on the European Green Deal and the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability. Over the course of four days, nine parallel sessions dealt with current topics. Key topics included innovations in life cycle management (LCA), nanosize plastics and plastic pollution, the behavior and toxicity of metals, advances in bioremediation and phytoremediation, alternatives to animal testing in ecotoxicity assessment, the use of biomonitoring approaches to monitor chemical exposure in the environment, and the endocrine disruption properties of challenging substances.
The FHTW was represented with a poster by MUT graduate Karoline Schweitzer and lecturer Romana Hornek-Gausterer. The title of the poster was “Pilot study: Seasonal pesticide exposure and corresponding metabolomic changes identified by non-target analysis of plasma samples obtained from hares in Austria”.
Martina Ortbauer’s participation in the conference was partly funded by the project “Systemic Evaluation Methods for Technology and Environmental Management” (funded by the City of Vienna).
Support for students at SETACFörderung von Studierenden bei der SETAC
SETAC is also intensively dedicated to supporting students under the motto “Dive into Ecotoxicology”. The SETAC Europe Student Advisory Council (SAC) has been in existence since 2007, representing the interests of students and providing a platform for exchange. At the conference, various activities contribute to the good atmosphere among the students, such as the Student Lunch, the evening events for students such as “Toxic Tales: A Happy Hour” and the presentation of the SETAC Europe Best Student Presentation Awards.
Gracias Sevilla, Servus Vienna! The next SETAC Europe will take place in Vienna from May 11-15, 2025.
