International Teaching Cooperation in Croatia: Students from UAS Technikum Wien Attend Bip Week on the Topic of Waste Management

27 August, 2025
By participating in the BIP Week in Zagreb, the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien focused on European cooperation. The emphasis was on innovative approaches to waste prevention and recycling.
At the end of June, five students from the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien had the opportunity to participate in an international Blended Intensive Program (BIP) week on the topic of waste management in Croatia. They were accompanied by Raphael Drexel and David Sengl (both from the competence field Climate-fit Buildings and Districts).
From June 23 to 27, 2025, a varied program of specialist lectures, workshops, and excursions was on the agenda at Zagreb University of Applied Sciences. The focus was on practical and international exchange on best practices in waste management – a topic of high relevance for the environment, technology, and society.
Interdisciplinary exchange and best practice examples
Together with partner universities from Finland (Turku AMK), Romania (Academia de Studii Economice din București) and Croatia (Zagreb University of Applied Sciences), challenges and solutions in waste management were discussed. The students worked in international groups on case studies and developed creative approaches to waste prevention, separation, and recycling.
Excursions took them to waste separation facilities and the coastal city of Zadar, where regional best practice examples were presented. This gave participants valuable insights into different national strategies and technical implementations.
Strengthening cooperation, advancing research
The aim of the program was not only to transfer knowledge, but also to strengthen international university cooperation. “Formats like this offer ideal opportunities to find future democases for research and teaching and to further expand existing partnerships with European universities,” emphasize Drexel and Sengl.
The BIP week format is funded by the EU as part of Erasmus+ and enables students and teachers alike to gain cross-border learning experiences with a strong practical focus.
