IT-Security Basic Education for Elementary School: Challenges in the Digital World

25 July, 2024

The IT security education project for elementary school at UAS Technikum Wien teaches young pupils basic knowledge about digital security in a fun way.

In the 2023/2024 academic year, the ambitious project on basic digital IT security education for elementary school, which was launched at UAS Technikum Wien, made further progress. After a successful previous year, in which young pupils from the GTVS Europaschule elementary school were introduced to the world of IT security at UAS Technikum Wien for the first time, the educational program was further expanded and refined.

Use of video stories to impart knowledge

A new approach this year was the introduction of short video stories aimed specifically at capturing the children’s attention and making complex content more tangible. These visual and interactive elements helped the pupils to engage even more intensively with the topics. After each learning unit, there was a quiz to check and consolidate what they had learned.

Positive feedback and future plans

The feedback was very positive and it is possible that in 8-10 years some of these young talents will be able to start an academic career at UAS Technikum Wien.

Alexander Mense (Head of the Faculty of Computer Science & Applied Mathematics) and Franz Hoheiser-Pförtner (Lecturer in the Cloud Service and Security competence field) are already planning the next phase of the project. Given the success of the pilot project, their aim is to extend the educational offer to other elementary school. This initiative is in line with UAS Technikum Wien’s idea of making digital education accessible at an early age and raising awareness of the importance of IT security.

In recent years, several master’s theses by students at UAS Technikum Wien have also been supervised as part of this project, making a valuable contribution to the further development of basic IT security education for elementary school.

Outlook

UAS Technikum Wien intends to continuously improve and adapt digital learning content and methods in order to provide innovative and effective educational opportunities in the field of IT security for young learners in the coming years. Through such initiatives, UAS Technikum Wien not only contributes to the education of the next generation, but also promotes awareness and skills in dealing with the challenges of the digital world.

The project on basic digital IT security education for elementary school, which was launched at UAS Technikum Wien, involves close cooperation with Urban Innovation Vienna (UIV). The digitalization department of Urban Innovation Vienna is the coordination office of DigitalCity.Wien, an initiative of the City of Vienna and the IT industry. The common goal is to make Vienna the digital hotspot of Europe.
