Lung Simulator in the Future Health Lab: UAS Technikum Wien Presents Realistic COPD Demonstration

14 August, 2024
In the Future Health Lab, a research team from UAS Technikum Wien presented realistic COPD demonstrations using the xPULM lung simulator.
At the CAPE 10 Open Day at the Future Health Lab, the FHTW research team from the Medical Engineering and Integrated Healthcare competence field had the opportunity to present their exciting development: the xPULM lung simulator.
A particular highlight here is the realistic representation of the respiratory process using a pig’s lung. This enabled visitors to directly observe the effects of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on breathing by implementing mechanical flow resistors. In addition, particularly interested guests were able to record their own breathing using spirometry and then see their breathing patterns on the pig’s lungs, which provided an impressive insight into how the human lungs work.
In addition to interested stakeholders (e.g. AstraZeneca, Lungenunion), a school class was also informed about how the lungs work and the risks of smoking and inspired by quizzes. The different perspectives and the exchange with the experts represented at the project stand led to an interesting exchange of enriching experiences and promising research ideas.
Medical technology research presented by UAS Technikum Wien
The Open Day at the Future Health Lab was therefore an excellent opportunity to present some of the successful activities in medical technology research and development at UAS Technikum Wien to a wide audience and to raise awareness of the risks of COPD.
The Future Health Lab is an innovation center for targeted solutions to challenges in the Austrian healthcare system. Here, partners from different sectors work on new solutions and the use of digital technologies to ensure that innovations reach the healthcare system and people.
The non-profit CAPE 10 Foundation aims to alleviate the suffering of people in need, especially when they are in distress due to illness. CAPE 10 – the House of Good Hope – was created to implement these efforts permanently, sustainably and at a specific location.
