Making Data Visible: Kettering University Students Developed Dashboards in the Data Science Infrastructure Workshop

Besuch von der Kettering University an der FH Technikum Wien

31 October, 2024

The visitors from the USA applied theoretical knowledge directly in practice together with students from UAS Technikum Wien.

Students from Kettering University in Flint, Michigan and their professor Dave Foster had the opportunity to visit UAS Technikum Wien from September 30 to October 3, 2024 and participate in exciting workshops on “IoT Data Networks”, “Data Science Infrastructure” and “Photovoltaic Systems” together with 9 students from UAS Technikum Wien. The workshops were held by Parisay Alibazibehbahani and Stefan Paschek (Faculty of Electronic Engineering & Entrepreneurship), Lukas Rohatsch and Mathias Ballner (Faculty of Computer Science) and Momir Tabakovic (Faculty of Industrial Engineering).

Programming microcontrollers

During the workshop in the IoT lab of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering & Entrepreneurship, the students learned how to set up an IoT network and program microcontrollers to read data from a sensor module that measures temperature and humidity. This data was then transmitted via a freely usable frequency band in the 868 MHz range to servers at the UAS Technikum Wien, where it was stored and integrated into a time series database. In the next step, the students used the Grafana tool to develop a dashboard to display the recorded sensor data visually. Another workshop dealt with photovoltaic systems and their system output and parameters.

Excursions included

The students were offered a varied program during their time in Vienna. They also took part in an excursion to the Plus-Energy high-rise building at TU Wien and a Vienna City Walk. These interdisciplinary activities gave the participants the opportunity to look beyond their own field of study and get to know different fields of technology. This measure was carried out in line with the Internationalization Strategy 2025 and counted as an internationalization measure.

Funding

The mobility of the Kettering students was funded by ERASMUS+.
