For the first time in twelve years, one of the prestigious EU research fellowships was awarded to an Austrian university of applied sciences.

On September 1, Gerrit Ter Haar began his position at UAS Technikum Wien as part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA PF). It is not only the research project on the sustainable use of green hydrogen that is noteworthy. The award of the fellowship—a prestigious program of the European Union—also marks a milestone for research at Austrian universities of applied sciences: For the first time in twelve years, such a fellowship has been awarded at a domestic university of applied sciences. Over the entire period from 2015 through 2026, only four fellowships were awarded to Swiss universities of applied sciences and seven to German universities of applied sciences.

International Partnership

Gerrit Ter Haar will conduct research for two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the FHTW in the research group led by Momir Tabaković. The fellowship was developed and submitted jointly by Momir Tabaković, Albert Benoni, Michael Strähle, and the fellow. The project is being carried out in collaboration with Stellenbosch University in South Africa, a long-standing partner institution, thereby underscoring the FHTW’s international research collaboration.

Using Water Resources Efficiently

Hydrogen is considered a key component of Europe’s energy transition and climate neutrality. The European Union has set a goal of producing 10 million metric tons of renewable hydrogen annually by 2030. At the same time, the water demand required to achieve this goal poses a growing challenge. The project is developing innovative approaches to use water resources more efficiently and thereby support the sustainable production of green hydrogen. In doing so, the FHTW is strengthening its international visibility within the European Research Area, further expanding its expertise in the field of renewable energy, and solidifying its role as an attractive research location for outstanding early-career researchers.
