Celebrating Excellence: Honorary Memberships Awarded for Outstanding Portuguese Collaboration

30 June, 2025
UAS Technikum Wien is strengthening its international network through strategic partnerships such as the one with UTAD. Outstanding contributions from Portugal have now been recognized with honorary membership.
In a ceremony marked by deep appreciation and international friendship, Rector Sylvia Geyer on behalf of the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien proudly awarded Honorary Memberships to three exceptional individuals whose dedication and contributions have shaped over a decade of fruitful cooperation between our institution and the Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD).
Collaboration began more than eleven years ago
The collaboration began more than eleven years ago, formally initiated through an Erasmus inter-institutional agreement signed during the 2014 academic year in the field of Biomedical Engineering. From this foundation, the partnership has expanded significantly, reaching into areas such as Computer Science, Renewable Energies, and eHealth. Our joint efforts have led to a thriving student and staff exchange, innovative research projects, and since June 2024, the launch of a Double Degree Programme in Medical Engineering and eHealth.
Three individuals in particular have been instrumental in making this long-standing relationship not only possible but exceptional, with „science, curiorsity, and the will to develop something fort he good,“ so Mathias Forjan in his celebratory speech. We are honoured to recognize Rute, João, and Luís for their outstanding service:
Over the years, significant progress has been made across several key areas, particularly in the development of smart, secure, and data-driven systems. Notable contributions include the design of user-friendly interfaces for medical simulations and the creation of innovative educational tools that enhance STEM learning through interactive games. These efforts have played a pivotal role in projects such as INNOVATE, PrepaCare(XR), and DIETER, leaving a lasting impact on both research and education.
Strengthening the global presence of UAS Technikum Wien
At the same time, strong international and interdisciplinary collaboration has been actively promoted, strengthening the global presence of UAS Technikum Wien. Through strategic partnerships with institutions in countries like Finland and Italy, and the organisation of key academic events such as the eHealth Summer School and the PrepaCare(XR) final conference, vital platforms for knowledge exchange and cross-disciplinary learning have been established.
The foundation of these collaborative efforts was laid by early initiatives that built the framework for cooperation, particularly through partnerships with academic and clinical institutions in Vila Real. These efforts have led to the development of joint programmes, including a Master’s degree and the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme on Human Safety, fostering long-term academic growth and innovation.
Three colleagues were honored
According to the Council of the UAS Technikum Wien, these three distinguished colleagues have fulfilled all criteria for this honour:
- Substantial contributions to the development of high-quality academic programmes
- Consistent engagement in our academic activities at a high level
- Outstanding efforts in strengthening institutional collaboration and enhancing the international standing of UAS Technikum Wien
„Their commitment has profoundly influenced the shape and success of our international activities, many of which would be unthinkable without their involvement,“ so Rector Sylvia Geyer, who, on behalf of the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien, award Rute, João, and Luís the title of Honorary Member with great pride and heartfelt gratitude.
We thank the colleagues for their dedication and look forward to many more years of inspiring collaboration.
