Focus on Green Steel: K1-Met Visits the Master’s Program in Mechanical Engineering

Michael Zarl from K1-MET gave a guest lecture at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien. Students gained insights into climate-friendly steel production.
In December 2025, Michael Zarl from K1-MET was a guest at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien. As part of the course “Mechanical Engineering in Industrial Practice” in the Master’s program in Mechanical Engineering, the expert in metallurgical processes gave students exciting insights into current developments in the production of green steel.
K1-MET is one of the leading international metallurgical competence centers for ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy. In his presentation, Michael Zarl highlighted the technological approaches that will play a key role in the decarbonization of the steel industry in the future.
Direct and Smelting Reduction of Steel with Hydrogen
The focus was on hydrogen-based direct and smelting reduction of iron ores, which are particularly important for Austria as a steel production location.
The students were actively involved in the lecture through questions, examples, and tasks to work out problems. This resulted in a practical examination of the challenges of the future industrial landscape from a metallurgical perspective. The guest lecture showed how important close exchange between universities and industry is for future-oriented education.
