Open Data Expo 2026 Brought Together Government, Academia, and the Public

02 April, 2026

Numerous institutions demonstrated how open data is used in various fields. The focus was on fostering dialogue between experts and the public.

On March 5, 2026, the Open Data Expo was held for the fifth time at UAS Technikum Wien – this year under the motto “Transparency Meets Innovation—Open Data for All”. In collaboration with the Vienna Business Agency, the event once again provided a platform for exchange between government, academia, and the public as part of the international Open Data Days. The Expo was funded by the “Interreg Austria–Czech Republic” program using resources from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Wide Range of Applications and Projects

Numerous exhibitors presented concrete applications, datasets, and projects based on freely accessible data. The City of Vienna was particularly well-represented with several municipal departments:

  • MA 46 – Traffic Organization and MA 21A – District Planning and Land Use Zoning Inner-Southwest showcased solutions related to bike routes and lane-specific routing.
  • MA 22 – Environmental Protection presented its open data offerings, the Vienna Air Monitoring Network, and the thematic city map Umweltgut.
  • MA 20 – Energy Planning presented energy data, energy flows, energy maps, and flagship projects from Vienna.
  • MA 41 – City Surveying and Geoinformation provided insight into the city’s geodata.

National institutions were also represented:

  • The Parliamentary Administration provided information about the Austrian Parliament’s open data offerings.
  • The Federal Computing Center and the Data Intelligence Offensive (DIO) showcased approaches related to data spaces and data-driven infrastructures.
  • The University of Vienna and AUSSDA – The Austrian Social Science Data Archive presented research data and its use in academia.

UAS Technikum Wien itself showcased several projects from research and teaching, including new applications such as Open Conflict, Literacy Map, and the Purchasing Power Calculator. This was complemented by demonstrations of multimodal real-time traffic information and a schedule assistant, as well as insights into the integration of open data into teaching.

Interactive Program and Exchange

Following the official opening in the morning, the expo was all about exchange: visitors could freely explore the booths and engage in conversation with experts from administration and research.

An Open Source Community Meetup fostered exchange between developers and interested parties; among others, the following individuals and organizations were present:

Kristina Maurer & Aleksandar Vrglevski (Vienna Business Agency)

Jan Labanc (City of Vienna)

Cristian Livadaru (n8n/Cloudvox)

Nadia Privalikhina (AI Insiders)

Nicolas Stocker (Austrian Armed Forces)

Mirko Oblak (SenLab)

Clara Meusburger (netidee)

Vera Böhner (FIWARE Foundation)

Lucas Scheiber (OPTIVICE energy)

Ernst Rindhauser (UAS Technikum Wien: Open Source and Community using the example of FH-Complete)

In the workshop “Visualization and Web Development” (organized by UAS Technikum Wien and the University for Continuing Education Krems (Universität für Weiterbildung Krems) ), practical methods for processing and presenting data were taught.

Open Data as a Foundation for Innovation

The event demonstrated the wide range of applications for open data—from mobility and the environment to energy and urban planning. Open data not only enables transparency in administration and politics but also serves as a central foundation for innovation, new business models, and evidence-based decisions.
