Open Source Hub Vienna – A New Center for Innovation

From smart cities to agriculture—the Open Source Hub Vienna shows how FIWARE technologies solve real-world challenges. An open-source map developed by UAS Technikum Wien in collaboration with the Vienna Business Agency highlights activities in the target region of Austria and Czechia.
The Open Source Hub Vienna, initiated by Wirtschaftsagentur, serves as a central platform for knowledge sharing, best practices, and networking. Its mission is to foster open collaboration, make projects visible, and advance the use of cutting-edge open-source technologies such as FIWARE.
On October 30 and 31, 2025, the Central European Open Source Policy Forum 2025 will take place in Brno (KUMST) – a central platform for exchange on digital sovereignty, open source in administration and education, and international cooperation. Further information can be found here.
FIWARE iHub Opening Event
The official opening of the FIWARE iHub on the 15th September 2025 offered a dynamic program with deep insights into the world of Open Source and FIWARE.
- Keynotes & Insights: Experts from research, public administration, and industry highlighted the role of Open Source in driving digital sovereignty, security, and innovation.
- Practical Examples: NEC Labs showcased an AI model predicting landmine contamination risks in Cambodia. Other talks demonstrated how Digital Twins and real-time data visualization can enable smart city platforms, energy solutions, and next-generation mobility.
- Hands-on Workshop: Prof. Dr. Haydar Mecit (Bochum University of Applied Sciences) provided a practical introduction to FIWARE-based Smart City platforms and IoT technologies that accelerate urban energy and mobility transitions.
The opening not only provided technical insights but also created space for networking, exchange, and the start of a vibrant Open Source community in Vienna.
FIWARE in Focus
As an official FIWARE iHub, Vienna will host regular workshops and training sessions to help companies, researchers, and developers adopt FIWARE technologies. Projects like PixelTwins already show how FIWARE can be applied in agriculture for precise data monitoring and smart solutions.
The Open Source Landscape, developed together with UAS Technikum Wien, further highlights the diversity of activities across Vienna.
