Women in Technology: Lived Reality and a Ticket to Successful Careers

The proportion of women in technical degree programs and professions can still be increased, although there are already many women shaping and influencing technology and science. The University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien is taking this as an opportunity to raise awareness with an advertising campaign: until the end of March, six women – from students to lecturers to managing directors – can be seen on a No. 2 tram. On the route between Dornbach and Friedrich-Engels-Platz, they represent more than 1,000 female students and more than 300 internal and external female employees. The campaign is symbolic of the opportunities for entering a technical career.

“As managing director of UAS Technikum Wien, I see how women actively shape their future with a technical degree – with higher starting salaries, secure career opportunities and international prospects. Technical professions offer more earning potential and flexibility than many other fields of study. In addition, women are often given preference over equally qualified men because companies value diversity. In this way, our female graduates not only strengthen their own careers, but also Austria’s position as a center of technology and business,” says Barbara Czak-Pobeheim. She can be seen on the tram, as can mechatronics/robotics student Eva, who believes, ”Women belong in technology – not as an exception, but as a driving force for innovation! Visible role models show us: You can do it too!”

Video message from the rector

Sylvia Geyer, rector of the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien, confirms this in her video message to girls and young women, which will be published on the occasion of International Women’s Day. She shares an anecdote from her own early days and offers the following tip: “Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Try things out, and the more you do it, the easier it will be for you and the more success you will have.”

Equality at University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien

UAS Technikum Wien is particularly focusing on equality and equal opportunities these days:

  • On Zero Discrimination Day on March 1, a renewed Pride flag was hoisted at the main location, representing the colors of the LGBTQIA+ community – as it has for years.
  • The week of International Women’s Day began on Monday, March 6, with a discussion about women’s soccer, hosted by the start-up Zone14, based at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien.
  • During the Open Day on March 21, there will again be a special tour for girls.
  • The FHTW Women’s Network meeting ensures regular exchange.
  • Once a year, the university hosts the FIT Info Days, where several hundred girls are given insights into technology, perhaps with the aim of becoming role models themselves one day.
  • UAS Technikum Wien has been awarded the state seal of quality equalitA since 2022.
