Microplastics and nanoparticles

In the competence team for teaching, funded by the City of Vienna (MA23), three employees of the FH Technikum Wien will dedicate themselves to the highly topical subject of “Microplastics and nanoparticles as environmental risks”.

In recent years, the general awareness of these problematic and persistent substances and their potential harmful effects on the environment and humans has increased. The need to study mechanisms of action of these particles is greater than ever.

Within the framework of this project, two major goals are being pursued. On the one hand, the topic will be sustainably embedded in teaching, especially in the newly designed Master’s program “Ecotoxicology & Environmental Management”, which is unique in Austria. This supports and enables excellent training of the necessary specialists to support various stakeholders, such as political decision-makers and companies in matters of environmental and climate protection. Furthermore, an expansion of a wide range of test systems for holistic eco- and human-toxicological risk assessments is planned, with a focus on genotoxicity tests. These will be applied in in-house research projects, but will also be made available to cooperation partners for risk assessments within the framework of company projects.
