Usability Labor

The usability laboratory has been one of the core elements of the Institute of Computer Sciences at UAS Technikum Wien for more than ten years. Usability, i.e. the user-oriented design of interactive systems, helps users to complete their tasks efficiently and constitutes an indispensable decisive competitive advantage. The usability laboratory at UAS Technikum Wien supports research and teaching as well as commercial projects and platforms for the purposes of improving users’ experiences with products on a lasting basis.

Usability Labor

Usability Tests

Planning and realization of usability tests with test persons in the in-house usability lab or on site. Creation of tasks / scenarios and questionnaires as well as acquisition and organization of test subjects. Video, audio, screen and input device recording of the tests as well as real-time transmission to an observation room. Analysis of the test results and preparation of a final presentation (findings and recommendations).

Expert Review

Usability review according to internationally recognized interaction guidelines (e.g. ISO 9241-110 / usability heuristics by Jakob Nielsen and Rolf Molich). Writing of a final report/presentation (management summary, disregarded/followed guidelines/heuristics, highlighting of difficulties/challenges, training recommendations if applicable).

Eye Tracking

Implementation of qualitative or quantitative eye tracking studies for detailed analysis of the gaze behavior of test subjects. State-of-the-art equipment: Two stationary and two mobile eye tracking systems (Tobii and SMI) are available. Evaluation of the recordings by means of scan paths, heat maps, focus maps, areas of interest and KPIs. Documentation of the results by means of a final report, presentation or highlight videos.

User Research

Requirements elicitation and documentation from the user’s perspective using recognized methods such as context-of-use analysis, interviews, participatory observation, and shadowing. Detailed prioritized requirements catalog with regard to design and handling.

UI/UX Prototyping

Iterative creation of user interface prototypes, starting with “low-fidelity” sketches up to realistic and functional “high-fidelity” prototypes. The prototypes are continuously evaluated and coordinated with users in order to be able to make necessary changes and adjustments at an early stage.
