Master’s Students Experience Da Vinci Surgical Robot

In November, the Workflows & Communication course led by Andrea Balz offered students of the Master’s program in Medical Engineering & eHealth a rare opportunity: Together with trainers from Intuitive’s clinical team, they worked directly on the Da Vinci robotic surgical system and experienced its field of aplication and technical processes firsthand.

Under the guidance of the experts, the students learned a great deal about the system, its technical setup, clinical applications, operating room procedures, and training paths for surgeons who work with robotic surgical systems. And, of course, there was plenty of fun to be had when they were allowed to try out the system for themselves.

The Da Vinci system from Intuitive Surgical is a robot-assisted surgical system for minimally invasive procedures. The system is currently used in several surgical disciplines and in a number of Austrian hospitals. The master’s program Medical Engineering & eHealth combines the development of medical devices with eHealth software solutions. In addition to engineering and programming fundamentals, specializations such as ventilation technology, photonics, medical information systems, and mobile applications are possible.
