Medical Engineering & eHealth

Master’s degree program at UAS Technikum Wien

Overview

eHealth Applications and Medical Devices

The Medical Engineering & eHealth master’s degree program is taught in English and produces biomedical engineers with an emphasis in medical technology, medical IT systems, health informatics, and telemedicine. The healthcare system is changing, technological advances and the use of mobile devices by patients are enabling new applications, for example in telemedicine, electronic health records (for example ELGA) or by means of apps for preventive healthcare. In addition, new and improved medical devices are constantly coming onto the market. The question is how these changes can benefit each individual and what the costs are. Graduates of this master’s program can design new devices, develop appropriate software, and have an overview of the entire system. They work with technology for the benefit of people.

The two focal points of this training are medical engineering and eHealth. It is about the development of medical devices from a scientific and electronic point of view as well as software development. Specialization is possible in electives such as respiratory technology, photonics, medical information systems or mobile applications, and there are also extensive research projects directly at UAS Technikum Wien.

Students Learn:

Medical Engineering

– Plan and implement the acquisition of complex medical systems and procedures typically used in hospitals and in medical practice.
– Conduct authorised training for technical and medical staff.
– Manage the ongoing support and operation of equipment and systems, as well as estimate and ensure the required service and maintenance.
– Participate in the planning, development and optimisation of products and manufacturing processes of medical devices and systems.
– Conduct scientific studies in cooperation with medical staff and to select and apply the necessary analytical methods.

eHealth

– Analyse processes in cooperation with users from medicine, care and social services and those affected, and to document them in a technically comprehensible way and to derive system requirements from these.
– Estimate and describe the technical and organisational requirements and the effort required for the implementation of IT networking projects and for the integration of subsystems and different technologies.
– Evaluate and select the interoperability standards (e.g. IHE, HL7, CEN, ISO, IEEE, PCHA) to be applied in specific situations. Furthermore, to contribute to the conception, planning, establishment and operation of regional, national and international IT infrastructures (e.g. telemedicine centres, Austrian electronic health record ELGA).

Career Prospects

Graduates have a broad education in biomedical engineering and eHealth. They have acquired practical experience and detailed knowledge in individual areas of specialisation.
They are employed in various companies; directly in hospitals or in other health care institutions.
In many cases, independent work as a consultant is possible, and new professional opportunities arise from the large number of start-ups that are currently emerging in this innovative environment.
New applications in medical technology and eHealth are bringing about serious changes to this sector and graduates take an important stake in this process. The ongoing research offers additional and growing opportunities.

Areas

The entire healthcare system with hospitals, practising doctors, nurses, care givers, relatives, manufacturers, distribution and maintenance of medical devices and IT systems, regulatory bodies (Medical Device Regulation).

Rolls

Biomedical engineers, medical technology officers, researchers and developers, risk managers, quality officers, consultants.

Tasks

Consulting for the clinical, wellfare and medical technology sectors. Collaboration in the development of state-of-the-art technology for clinical applications, digital health solutions (eHealth) and their high-tech system integration, medical informatics for data analysis and the implementation of medical information systems.

What are the Admission Requirements?

Target group: Prior technical knowledge or interest is required, including in the areas of software development and electronics. The students come from technical bachelor programs or have gained professional experience, for example in the medical-technical environment. In addition, a basic interest in medicine is necessary. In healthcare, a lot is based on experience and informal knowledge – graduates must be able to deal with this in their daily work.

Master’s degree programs build on a completed bachelor’s degree program and serve to deepen or specialize or expand existing competencies.

The admission requirement for the Master’s program in Medical Engineering & eHealth is a completed UAS Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject or the completion of an equivalent degree at a recognized domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution (at least 180 ECTS credits).

If the equivalence is basically given and only individual supplements to the full equivalence are missing, the program director is entitled to combine the determination of equivalence with the requirement of examinations to be taken during the respective master’s program.

Joshua Hill

The program was incredibly engaging and brought together a diverse group of lecturers and students inspired to upgrade the current healthcare landscape.

Double Degree

The programme is also offered as a double degree programme in cooperation with the Brno University of Technology in the Czech Republic. A double degree is a type of studies involving two universities and enabeling students from both universities to gain experience abroad and at the same time obtain a second degree (MMSc.). In a double degree programme, the exact course of study as well as the mutual recognition of courses are contractually regulated, and the final exams are mutually recognised. You can find out all the details at the study programm. Further information is also available on our flyer.
