Ski and Snowboard Workshop: Exciting Theory, Practical Experience on the Slopes

12 December, 2025
Sports equipment practice in Obertauern for bachelor’s students studying Sports Engineering & Ergonomics.
From December 1 to 3, the third of a total of three practice-oriented workshops for the Bachelor’s degree program in Sports Engineering and Ergonomics took place. As part of the course “Sports Equipment Practice – Theory, Application, and Analysis,” fifth-semester students met in Obertauern to put their theoretical knowledge into practice.
The workshop offered students another opportunity to apply and deepen the basics of ski and snowboard equipment, material testing, and biomechanical principles they had previously learned through self-study. In practical projects, the edge angle when skiing was examined, skiing technique was evaluated based on acceleration data, and changes in the geometry of the students’ own equipment under the influence of outside temperature were analyzed.
Evaluation to follow
After the last part of the practical sports workshop series, the focus is once again on follow-up work in independent study: Students evaluate the recorded data and create scientific posters that clearly summarize the results and findings of the workshop.
The ski and snowboard workshop is another example of the practical and interdisciplinary education offered in the Sports Engineering and Ergonomics program. By combining theory and practice, students are optimally prepared for the challenges of sports and exercise science.
Measurement week in the master’s program
At the same time, the Master’s in Sports Technology was also out on the slopes in Obertauern. Third-semester students completed their practical winter measurement week. The topics in the Master’s program are similar in principle, but they come directly from companies and are dealt with at an advanced level using more sophisticated measurement technology.
