UAS Technikum Wien Publishes Its First Voluntary Sustainability Report

12 May, 2026
The completion of this comprehensive ESG project serves as a starting point for the further development of future sustainability initiatives and goals.
With the publication of its first voluntary sustainability report, UAS Technikum Wien is sending a clear signal of transparency to students, staff, funding bodies, and other stakeholders. The report is based on the “Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for SMEs” (VSME), which was developed by the “European Financial Reporting Advisory Group” (EFRAG) on behalf of the European Commission, and provides a structured framework for transparently presenting the university’s sustainability activities.
For Horst Rode, Managing Director of UAS Technikum Wien, addressing the various dimensions of sustainability is a strategic decision: “Even though the topic of sustainability is currently facing headwinds against the backdrop of economic and political crises, and reporting requirements have been partially relaxed—we do not view sustainability as merely a regulatory issue, but as a crucial component of future-oriented university development. After all, the pressing issues behind the acronym ESG—Environment, Social, Governance—remain. That is precisely why we want to use our voluntary report to provide transparency to our stakeholders regarding our activities and progress.”
Florian Eckkrammer, Managing Director of UAS Technikum Wien, also emphasizes the pragmatic aspects of addressing sustainability issues: “For us, sustainability also means consciously examining and actively managing resource consumption in university operations—for example, in areas such as mobility, energy, or infrastructure. A structured look at sustainability data helps us identify inefficient processes and improve them in a targeted manner, for instance regarding energy consumption or material usage. This allows us to use resources responsibly and position UAS Technikum Wien more efficiently in the long term.”
About the Sustainability Report
The preparation of this report is part of a comprehensive ESG project. As part of this project, a materiality analysis—based on the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS)—was conducted, and a comprehensive sustainability strategy with six key areas of action was developed for the first time. The sustainability strategy is presented in the report alongside the vision and mission, and the areas of action serve as the foundation for future ESG measures. The report was prepared through close, cross-departmental collaboration.
The report presents the relevant key figures for the 2024/25 fiscal year, taking into account activities at both the Höchstädtplatz and ENERGYbase locations. As part of the project, a carbon footprint was also calculated for the first time, summarizing UAS Technikum Wien’s total greenhouse gas emissions across the three scopes.
In addition to providing a transparent overview of sustainability activities, the report serves as the starting point for the further development of future measures and goals. These include, among others:
- Measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to lower the CO₂ footprint of UAS Technikum Wien in the long term
- The promotion of sustainable mobility solutions for students and staff during stays abroad, for example through more conscious travel planning and the development of a mobility concept
- The further expansion of sustainability-focused teaching within the degree programs
- The further development of data management to systematically record sustainability metrics and enable even more comprehensive reporting in the future
- As well as energy-saving measures in day-to-day operations, including the purchase of eco-labeled electricity and technical optimizations in the building infrastructure
