From Sketch to Playable Prototype: New Games for the DIETER Research Project

14 July, 2026
Teams of two developed a variety of game ideas for a digital educational escape room. The goal of DIETER is to spark interest in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology.
Ten games in just four weeks: Students in the Game Development track of the Bachelor’s program in Computer Science have successfully completed their game projects as part of the DIETER research project. Working in teams of two, they developed their ideas from the initial sketch to the finished, playable prototype. The resulting games are compelling evidence of how agile product development, creative problem-solving, and close collaboration can lead to impressive results in a short period of time.
Each game takes its own unique playful approach
The names of the games are just as diverse as the game concepts themselves: With titles like GetOut, Chemistry, Crazy Physics, Electronodes, Gatepuzzle, Graph Wizard, Larry Food Poker, Magnetize Marble, Opticat, and Rober Assembly, the projects reflect the creativity and ingenuity of the aspiring game developers. Each game takes its own unique playful approach and contributes to the diverse collection of prototypes.
The goal is to increase interest in STEM subjects through motivating learning approaches
The games are developed as part of the DIETER research project, a digital educational escape room designed specifically for upper secondary school students. The project aims to spark interest in STEM subjects—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—through playful and motivating learning approaches and to foster skills in these areas in a sustainable way. The prototypes developed by the students make an important contribution to this effort and demonstrate how innovative game concepts can convey educational content in creative ways.
The research project DIETER is funded by the MA 23 – Economy, Labor, and Statistics of the City of Vienna and will run until March 2026. (MA23, Call 36-01: Serious Games in Teaching and Research)
