„United in Curiosity:“ Connecting Research, Teaching & Industry, International Week 2026

01 June, 2026
Under the theme “From Lab to Lecture: Connecting Research, Teaching, and Industry,” the event created a space for open exchange on how higher education institutions can integrate research into everyday teaching practice while responding to the demands of industry, innovation, and internationalization.
How can research meaningfully shape teaching? Where do universities of applied sciences position themselves between academia and industry? And how can international collaboration strengthen both research and education across borders?
These questions were at the heart of International Week 2026 at UAS Technikum Wien, where international partners, researchers, lecturers, and higher-education professionals came together for a week dedicated to exploring the ever evolving relationship between research, teaching, and applied sciences.
Balance Between Academic Teaching And Research
Throughout the week, participants examined how institutions across different countries approach the balance between academic teaching and research. Discussions highlighted the diversity of international systems, expectations, and support structures — and the opportunities these differences create for cross-border collaboration. Workshops and networking sessions encouraged participants to share strategies for joint projects, research partnerships, and curriculum development, while also addressing the administrative and ethical challenges that often accompany international cooperation.
A central focus of the program was the question of transfer: how can research move effectively from the lab into the lecture hall? Participants explored best practices for integrating research into teaching and reflected on how research activities can enrich everyday academic work. Particular attention was given to the role of applied sciences institutions, uniquely positioned between research and industry, and how this position can be leveraged to create innovation-driven learning environments.
„One of the central questions guiding this week‘s discussions is: How can research become a living part of teaching, rather than an abstract add-on?Not only in advanced seminars or final theses, but from the early stages of a student’s academic journey. When students engage with real research questions, when they experience uncertainty, iteration, and discovery, they do not just acquire knowledge. They develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a deeper understanding of how innovation actually happens.“
The event also opened conversations around work-integrated study programs, examining how research-led teaching can be embedded within professionally-oriented education models. Sessions explored institutional structures that support researchers and lecturers, the development of advisory and collaboration frameworks, and the ways in which higher education institituions can strengthen sustainable research cultures within applied higher education.
„When students get their hands on things, they learn more. When they see it‘s relevant, they learn even more.“
The event further highlighted the importance of international networks and interdisciplinary exchange. Through collaborative formats such as “Research Connect” and “Curriculum Connect,” participants discussed future opportunities for joint initiatives, Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs), and long-term institutional partnerships. The exchange of experiences, challenges, and best practices demonstrated the value of international dialogue in shaping resilient and future-oriented higher education systems.
Combination Of Strategic Discussions, Workshops And Informal Networking
Beyond the formal program, the week fostered meaningful professional connections and strengthened the institution‘s global academic community. The combination of strategic discussions, collaborative workshops, and informal networking created an atmosphere that encouraged both reflection and innovation.
The week reaffirmed UAS Technikum Wien’s commitment to applied research, international collaboration, and the ongoing development of higher education at the intersection of research, teaching, and industry. Adapting the motto of Eurovision hosted in Vienna last week, „united in music,“ Rector Sylvia Geyer reframed for our event „united in curiosity.“
We thank all speakers, participants, and partner institutions for contributing their perspectives, expertise, and ideas, and for making this year’s International Week an inspiring platform for collaboration and exchange.
