Women in Computer Science and Business: insights into the theory & practice of the women‘s degree program at HTW Berlin

31 January, 2025
Women at technical universities play a key role in enriching the diversity of perspectives and ideas in science and technology, fostering innovation and creating a more equitable and inclusive future in technological development.
Under this premise, the International Office of the UAS Technikum Wien organized a delegation visit with three staff members, Rector Sylvia Geyer, Head of Faculty Alexander Mense (Computer Science & Applied Mathematics) and staff member of the Teaching and Learning Center Geraldine Metzger, and four students of the Bachelor’s program Business Informatics from UAS Technikum Wien to visit the women’s degree program Informatik und Wirtschaft at HTW Berlin.
The visit offered an opportunity to immerse themselves in the content and structures of the degree program and to promote an exciting exchange between the delegation participants and the students. The visit offered a varied mix of theory, practice, and interactive exchange.
In addition to attending lectures in programming, computer architecture, and operating systems, there was also a discussion with students of the 5th semester, who gave the staff members an insight into their current study projects. These students are working on real solutions for external clients as part of their ‘Projects in Practice’ course. This gave the delegation the opportunity to find out more about the practical challenges and solutions that the students are facing and to exchange ideas with the young engineers and economists.
The dialogue with the professors also enabled the delegation to gain a deeper understanding of the scientific and practical aspects of the degree program and to discuss possible future trends and challenges. Parallel appointments with Chancellor Tilo Wendler and colleagues from IT Security were organized in addition, in which ideas for collaboration were forged.
The visit offered a unique insight into the practice-orientated training and interdisciplinary approaches available to the students. From interacting with the students on the program and observing programming exercises to attending lectures and discussions with the professors, the visit was a valuable opportunity to get to know the innovative concept of the program and experience the practical methods that are taught here.
We would like to thank the colleagues at HTW Berlin and we look forward to a welcoming you at the UAS Technikum Wien!
„Women in technology are not only an asset for science, but for the future itself. Their perspectives, ideas and innovative strength are crucial to mastering the challenges of the modern world and shaping the technology of tomorrow. It is our responsibility to foster a generation of women who are as naturally represented in technology as any other field.“
