IHE-Europe Connectathon in Brussels: International Exchange on Digital Health Solutions

At the IHE-Europe Connectathon 2026, UAS Technikum Wien networked with international stakeholders in digital healthcare. Presentations from the fields of research, practice, and education highlight concrete progress and future developments.
The Master’s program in Medical Engineering & eHealth at UAS Technikum Wien was represented at the IHE-Europe Connectathon in Brussels—one of the most important international gatherings for interoperability in healthcare.
A delegation of graduates, students, and faculty members from the program used the intensive week-long event to actively contribute to key developments in the field of eHealth, network internationally, and advance current research topics.
Contributions from Practice and Research
FHTW graduate Nikolas Krond Krondraf, who works at ELGA GmbH (Electronic Health Record Austria), presented the successful Austrian solution for the standardized transmission of radiology images at the IHE Experience Days. His presentation illustrates how interoperable systems are already making a concrete contribution to improving healthcare today.
Another graduate, Adnan Marvillo, plays a central technical role at the Connectathon: As a so-called monitor on the test floor, he reviews numerous transactions from international software manufacturers and ensures that they comply with IHE standards. This quality assurance is crucial for the effective networking of healthcare systems.
Current research from the program is also represented: Student Lorisse Cobos-Zardoni is working on her master’s thesis on data quality in secondary data use. On site, she took the opportunity to engage with international experts and discuss current challenges and potential solutions. Together, the delegation participated in the workshop “Interoperability in EHDS Secondary Use,” where next steps for the use of health data in the European context—particularly within the framework of the European Health Data Space (EHDS)—were developed. The goal is to demonstrate the first concrete applications in practice by the IHE Connectathon 2027 in The Hague.
Focus on Future Skills
Another focus was on the further development of training formats in the field of digital health. Together with Mathias Forjan (Managing Director of Technikum Wien Academy and graduate of the Master’s program in Medical Engineering & eHealth), the delegation contributed to the workshop “Digital Health Future Skills” as well as the IHE International Board of Directors Open Meeting. Discussions centered on current progress and future strategies of the IHE Education Committee.
This generated numerous ideas for collaborations with European research projects, healthcare institutions, and companies—with the goal of aligning educational offerings even more closely with the demands of a dynamically evolving healthcare sector.
Specialists for the digital future of healthcare
The week in Brussels demonstrated impressively that the digitalization of healthcare requires highly qualified professionals who combine technical expertise with a deep understanding of clinical processes and international standards. “The Medical Engineering & eHealth program makes a significant contribution to this. Together, we create effective solutions for healthcare,” said Stefan Sauermann, Vice Rector and Program Director of the Master’s in Medical Engineering & eHealth at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien.
