Partner Visit to Iceland

19 June, 2024

At the beginning of May 2024, a delegation of the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien traveled to Reykjavik University (RU) in Iceland. The main purpose of the exchange was to intensify existing collaborations and create a solid basis for further cooperation opportunities.

After a warm welcome from Rector Ragnhildur Helgadóttir (Reykjavik University), the seven-member delegation consisting of Rector Sylvia Geyer, Managing Director Florian Eckkrammer, Head of Faculty Computer Science & Applied Mathematics Alexander Mense, Head of Bachelor and Master Mechanical Engineering Patrick Eisner, Head of Bachelor Biomedical Engineering Johannes Martinek, Head of Competence Center Medical Engineering & Integrated Healthcare Andrea Balz and Head of Quality Assurance and Institutional Research Kurt Sohm had an intensive exchange with their Icelandic colleagues from the Departments of Engineering, Applied Engineering and Computer Science. Associate Prof. Þórður Helgason and Prof. Paolo Gargiulo, both long-standing partners in Biomedical Engineering, not only reported on the latest innovations in teaching and research, but also emphasized the great importance of cooperation with the UAS Technikum Wien. Furthermore, the industrial cooperation with the company Össur, a global player in the field of prosthetics and orthotics, was successfully strengthened during the trip to Iceland.

Particularly exciting overlaps arose in the fields of renewable energies and mechanical engineering, which will now be used or expanded in the future as part of student mobilities. In addition, the possibility of an exchange at staff level, including doctoral studies at the RU, was discussed, which offers exciting prospects for employees of UAS Technikum Wien.

The trip ended with a tour around the Golden Circle, where impressive natural attractions in Iceland, such as the geothermal spring Geysir, the Blue Lagoon near Grindavik and the mighty waterfall Gullfoss could be visited.
